Those who would like to adopt a child in Alabama have to meet the main requirement which is that the parents must have the ability to give the child a positive upbringing and to parent them with love.
In addition there are six specific requirements in the state, which are that the prospective parent must be over nineteen years old, those who are married must have been married for at least three years, at least one of the prospective adoptive parents must be a United States citizen, there must be enough personal space in the home for the child along with adequate facilities, the parents must be healthy enough to look after the child and they must consent to a background and criminal history check.
Those who wish to adopt must first complete an inquiry form to receive an information pack and then a more detailed application form. This is followed by a series of ten Group Preparation and Selection meetings which involve 30 hours of training.
The next stage is the home study and a family profile examination and finally they will be given information on a potential child. They will then meet with the child in person before the actual placement takes place. The final stage of the process is when the legal adoption begins which is three months after the child has been in the home. Once the final legal confirmation is granted then the child is legally adopted.
