There are several types of criminal charges that a person can incur but perhaps one of the most widespread throughout the country as well as in the state of Alabama is domestic battery or assault. It is easy for people who don’t have much if any firsthand experience with domestic abuse to stereotype it as something that only happens to a particular demographic. But domestic abuse does not discriminate. It unfortunately cuts across all social and economic boundaries as was evidenced recently when a federal judge in Alabama was arrested and brought up on criminal charges for domestic assault.
The news is initially surprising to most since we as a society are not used to hearing about someone so high up in such a prominent and prestigious public position committing any kind of crime, let alone one that is so serious. But there are plenty of past criminal cases involving domestic assault charges brought against every manner of celebrity from professional athletes, to corporate executives to, as in this case, federally appointed judges.
In this recent case, the judge was alleged to have assaulted his wife while the couple was in Atlanta. He was subsequently arrested and charged with battery. Like most domestic abuse cases, this one will likely be a complex one because of the nature of the circumstances that typically surround these types of legal matters. But exemplary legal counsel is critical for any defendant in a criminal case in order to protect the defendant’s right because across the country in general and in Alabama in particular, these charges carry very harsh penalties.
